3/30/24, I’m just reading this post. Not sure how I missed it but want to say, I love this story. I remember the shoot (pink shirt) and love that you used that portrait several times! I’ve never been a cover model like you, but I can relate to the challenges of being photographed. I coach myself that a pleasant smile (w/proper head tilt;) is always a win, no matter what you are feeling inside.

Jessica, I’m forever grateful for you being at that shoot and coaching me on the head tilt!! You photograph beautifully and you always have that amazing smile! An inspiration!

OH MY GOSH! I'm ecstatic that Dana put a link in her Substack this morning to your pub. I'm a bouquet grower, too, and didn't even know that was a thing, since I just like to put flowers in a vase and give bouquets as gifts. I grow mostly dahlias, but branched out to the ranunculus and anemones for earlier blooms. I'm really happy to have found you and I have just subscribed.

PS Four years since I quit drinking 🌸

Ilona, So happy you're here! It's hard to find the other flower people on Substack! I'm growing ranunculus and anemones (just a few) for the first time this year - can't wait to see how they turn out. Yay, we'll compare notes!

Great description of the process that goes on creating an article. Which needs to be very visual with photographs. (And Scott Phillips is a great photographer!). Yes, to be on stage and "on" must be very stressful. Usually, you are the only person that feels it.

Great photos of flowers. And you. Your hair is so beautiful.

Frankly, I grow flowers for cutting, but the dahlias are the ones that are no-fail for me. I would love to grow that chartreuse zinnia (if that's what it is???).

Hi Kathy, and thank you. Boy did we spend a lot of time on photo shoots at Taunton!!

That zinnia is Zinnia Queen Lime part of the whole Queeny series that is so beautiful! I love them. They're not quite as tall and bodacious as the Benary's Giant zinnias but the nuances in the coloring are wonderful.

I want a Zinnia Queen Lime now too!!!!! I haven't seen them in NJ.

Thanks for sharing Susie. Good photographers are simply amazing at helping us remove or move through the discomfort of being photographed. The ones you shared here are lovely and colorful and representative of your spirit.

Our photog at our wedding in December was magical. She removed all of Ann’s self-consciousness and the images are forever 🙏

Dee, I loved your wedding photos and the joy they expressed. I guess that was one of the ideas I was trying to articulate - that if you can get past the “what do I look like” and understand the benefit in sharing joy and beauty (in this case flowers - and the promise of being able to grow flowers), that’s much more important and ultimately helps in how you feel about yourself!!

And you did articulate it beautifully. That’s what made me think of our wedding. Happy Sunday friend 🙏

You too Dee!

These are joyous, beautiful photos, Susie! I have a fraught relationship with getting my picture taken (and seeing the photos afterwards), so loved reading your thoughts on this and how sobriety has shifted things.

Dana, I love those black and white photos you share - to me they are so reflective of your journey, your priorities and your inner (and outer!) beauty. But, yeah, it is so hard to expose our vulnerability!

Thank you, Susie. I'm way more comfortable with black and white...that's why next to none of my pictures are in colour!

Oh I hear you on that - love black and white!

terrific loved this i'd be paid here but maxxed out had to draw line...even with what i read one can get lost and as you well know there's a sh...t l-load to do get done

it is so true of course that what we feel about ourselves inside reflects on the outside and here i am on the eve of the Oscars championing your own calmer confident conclusions in that regard when we all know its easier for us of a certain age to accept we will never be our younger selves, the "hollywood" aspiring ones that yes on occasion we doted on in a certain light at a certain moment knowing; absolutely NO-ONE could resist us.....now its almost a relief to let go of that anxiety and easier if you had used the youth to full advantage so as to uhhhh accumulate memories......

that book title was outrageous and funny your almost naive reaction but the best is the frantic moving around of all those plants in the background of hoop house for photo...poor things and in the end what did it matter as you take up the attention yeah this was a good one!!!

appleton, you always make me smile with your insights. It's kind of a crazy topic - and yeah on the day of the oscars when looks are everything - I don't know how they do it. Interesting to hear Kate Winslet on this topic. I do think it is just one more way that people try to escape reality and fill voids - when we have everything we need to be content right within us if we can just get to that place! Thanks for being here, as always.
