I was thinking, as I crouched in the grass to run my hands over the cool carpet of clover: You don’t just step through a portal and find yourself in a new place. You see the opening in the distance and make your way toward it – with intention. You persevere, you flounder. At times you move with grace; other times you are sidestepping, at best, like a crab. You doubt, you pray. You reframe and move forward, perhaps only inches every hour like highway traffic constrained to one lane.
