Pam and I just got back from more than two weeks away, and even though we had someone watching and watering...it isn't you, is it. I was in Wales wondering, Will he check on the new bottlebrush buckeye that is maybe maybe planted in too much sun and needs almost constant tending?
It's hard to leave a garden you care about to someone you're paying to watch it...but there are no good alternatives.
I’m so sorry that you both have to leave your haven for a while, Susie, and pray that things will stay safe at home as well as in Delaware. I can only assume that this is regarding your Dad and will be praying for him as well.
Ethel, he is doing okay. We had a couple little emergencies but all stabilized and we will be celebrating his 96th tomorrow - WHEW. Thank you for asking and praying.
I feel like there isn't enough time in a day to accomplish what I hope to accomplish. So, sitting down with a cup of coffee and reading this was a luxury...One I am so happy I granted myself.
I am not really much for Substack, in fact, I usually ignore it, but your honest and earthy words are a joy to read; they make me feel peaceful and connected to what matters. You don't try to be the perfect everything, you're just you! I love that.
Sharon, I'm so glad you found this peaceful. I think for me, that's what the writing does. It really centers me. And lordy, no perfection here - and I learned to be completely honest in sobriety. I just don't have any other choice! Thank you for reading and for commenting.
It’s hard for homebodies to leave home (and garden). Especially when we put so much of ourselves into every nook and seedling. It’s like leaving part of ourselves behind. I hope your travels go smoothly.
Exactly - it is like leaving a part of ourselves behind, Kelli. I just read your post tonight and it was beautiful and sad. My best friend lives in York, so I know Biddeford. Just incredibly sad for that young man's family and this stuff is completely unnecessary and really, unhinged.
Do you know I thought about installing a ring camera on my garden to monitor it while I was in Chilmark? I understand your lament…it’s like leaving (and neglecting) something you love. There will be weeds when you return and bolted lettuce and cilantro, but it will be fine.
Ha, I love the camera idea - but I'm afraid I'd see way too many critters! I know it will all be fine, but it was hard to go when literally this was the week that the annuals started to bust out. But they'll be there when we get back, as you say!
Traveling mercies. I just picked our first three Sun Golds on Friday, so I understand how hard it is to leave at such a ripe time. I hope your dad is okay. And that photo of Farmer is just everything.
PS: Thought of you this morning in church because we sang 392, the tune name of which is “Vineyard Haven.”
I don't know that hymn - will have to check it out! So glad you've got Sungolds coming in, Susie - yum! thank you for your thoughts and will keep you posted!

You get it, David! It is so hard, and yes, it isn't you...but the travel is worth it.

Thank you, Susie. So much. It is unnecessary and unhinged. May we find our better angels soon.
Such a soothing post! I felt like a welcome guest in your home.
I'm glad Diane!

so sorry, Susie😔
I hope things are okay in Delaware. ❤️
I’ve been away for a few days and my table is bare. You’ve inspired me to get out a favorite runner and add some pretty jars and vases and blooms.
Oh I’m
So glad Sue! That makes me happy.
Susie…..I just woke and read this. A beautiful and meaningful way to start my day. I’m in my querencia and understand your feelings. Safe travel Jean
Thank you Jean!
