Garden Gram #9: An Historic Iris Collection
Playing hooky on a workday got me a timely view of a Vineyard iris collection in bloom.
My husband lured me out of my desk chair and tossed me in the car this afternoon to accompany him on an iris-viewing expedition. Of course, my husband is no flower fanatic, but his friend and colleague Fred Hancock had invited him to see his iris collection in bloom, and my husband felt sure I would benefit greatly by this break in my workday.
Boy was he right. I know almost nothing about iris, but Fred knows almost everything. He’s the Northeast Director of the Historic Iris Preservation Society, and his collection of heirloom and other iris numbers over 130 varieties. A historic iris variety is defined as one that was introduced 30 or more years ago.
