Flower Spotlight: Ranunculus asiaticus (Persian Buttercup)
Family: Ranunculaceae (Buttercup family)
Description: This hybrid cultivar from the buttercup family, which contains more than 1700 species, has become a darling of the floral industry because of its many-petaled rose-like blooms that come in a variety of both pastel and bright colors. The flowers naturally grow on long stems, so are perfect for cutting.
Pro-growing vs. local growing vs. home-growing: Like many of the beautiful flowers I’ve been trying to learn to grow since I took the Floret online workshop, ranunculus used to be grown mostly in greenhouses and transported from far away, as they do well in a temperature-controlled atmosphere and like to bloom in cool weather.
